FIVE NATIONS~A review for Multicultural Children's Book Day

I’m happy to be a reviewer for national Multicultural Children's Book Day again this year, celebrated Jan 27. I received FIVE NATIONS-Flora, Fabric & Fauna, created by Dani Dixon. It’s a beautiful, high quality coloring book and it has been KID TESTED! (When I received it in the mail, I wrapped it up along with a new pack of Sharpies and gave it to my 13-year-old daughter for Christmas, and she loved it, started coloring in it right away.)

(Dani Dixon)

FIVE NATIONS- Flora, Fabric & Fauna coloring book is a companion book for the YA novel, FIVE NATIONS Peace Day.

I asked Dani why she choose or felt the need to create FIVE NATIONS.

“Kids start learning very early to dream - or to dream smaller. Books are a huge part of that. The stats for books about children of color are kind of devastating. The Five Nations series was part of my different take on "princesses" in the way that my “13" series is my different take on "people with superpowers”.

Dixon also began indie publishing house TUMBLE CREEK PRESS ,which is the imprint for all her books to date.

“I've been doing comics for nearly 10 years now. Also to clarify, I don't draw in my books. I hire a number of great artists to work in my books. For instance, in FFF has the work of 4 artists. I created the world, did all the research and supplied the artists with photo references and in some cases backstory.”

The synopsis of Five Nations: Endelle; Azin; Callen; Ponosta; and Erduz; are spread out roughly like the fingers on a hand. Each Nation shares a border with at least one other Nation. They also share a common land, a neutral zone, known as 'The Palm'. The Nations have held a comfortable peace for generations by faithfully maintaining the desperate agreement forged after decades of debilitating war. Each Nation has its own Royal Family, customs, and language. In each Royal Family there is a Princess, whose sole responsibility is to be an Ambassador of Peace.

On the annual commemoration of the end of the great wars, "Peace Day", these five girls - Princess Tuyên, Princess Anna’ Bilh-heh-neh, Princess Eiric, Princess Catequil, Princess Kelile - are prepared only to dance, laugh and exchange gifts. That isn't, however, what they will be called to do.
